The 50 Shades of Grey Make Over

This blog post is definitely not as cheeky as it sounds I can assure you…

After we moved to the new house at Christmas, I had slight buyers remorse about our new sofa purchase (sssh, don’t tell Ben!) The mocha colours had felt perfect in the old house with the cream and brown tones but they felt really brown in the new house and a stark contrast to the white walls and very pale cream carpet.

I set out to hunt ideas on what I could do to tie the colours together but I just kept coming back to a grey colour pallete.

I gave the cushions an overhaul which helped but we found some wonderful items from Laura Ashley to really complete our 50 shades of grey make over.

We ordered some bespoke drum lamp shades in a beautiful soft grey fabric called Austin Dove Grey – we couldn’t believe the difference; excuse the pun but they completely lightened the room!

I always love fresh flowers in the house but in all honesty I’m not made of money to have fresh flowers in every room, every week so I have been looking for realistic artificial flowers that could take pride of place in the lounge. The Hydrangea and Sea Holly Artificial Flowers are perfect. I’m a huge hydrangeas fan so they had my vote straight away.

Our new house is detached, which although fantastic when you have a toddler with a passion for singing loudly (his current favourite is Duran Duran ‘Rio’), it can be on the chilly side. We are hoping to replace the fire with a stove in long term but in the meantime it’s all about the cosy throws and warm textures. The Herringbone Striped Steel Throw not only looks gorgeous thrown over the sofa or the footstool, but is really soft and snuggly too.

I’m a huge candle fan (if you follow me on Instagram you will notice most photos feature a candle!) The mantlepiece really needed something on each side to frame the mirror – these Hurricane lamps were a perfect addition and they look so pretty when we light them in the evenings or on dull days. On my latest trip to Laura Ashley, I had a look at their fashion range. I’m a sucker for a breton top so when I saw this Stripe Breton I fell in love! Navy and white feel like spring to me and with the bronze buttons on the shoulders, it has a real nautical feel too. I’ve been wearing this with jeans and converse and also underneath a denim dress and it looks really fresh.

I feel our spring overhaul has done wonders for the living room (and my wardrobe!) Our 50 shades of grey makeover is complete with a cool and calm but also cosy living space and I’m all set for spring with my nautical Breton!

I was kindly gifted these items from the wonderful team at Laura Ashley.
